10" Satsuki Azalea with rock

The Satsuki Azalea (Rhododendron indicum) is a compact, slow-growing broadleaf evergreen shrub native to Japan highly prized for its brilliant late-spring/early-summer blooms and exceptional popularity as an outdoor bonsai. The name "Satsuki" translates to the "5th month" in the traditional Japanese calendar, corresponding to its peak blooming season in May and June.

Key Characteristics
  • Flowers: Funnel-shaped, ranging from 1 to 7 inches across, featuring vivid shades of white, pink, red, and purple. A single plant can naturally produce multi-colored or patterned variations.
  • Foliage: Small, glossy, oval-shaped green leaves with delicate, hair-like textures that can shift to a rich reddish-purple in colder months.
  • Size: Typically grows 2 to 5 feet tall and wide in a garden setting, though it is routinely kept much smaller.
Growing Conditions & Care
  • Hardiness Zones: Thrives best in USDA Zones 6 through 9.
  • Sun Exposure: Prefers full sun to partial shade; protection via shade cloth is recommended during extreme summer heat above 85°F–88°F.
  • Soil Requirements: Requires highly acidic, well-draining soil. For container or bonsai culture, specialized volcanic and acidic Kanuma Soil is traditionally used to accommodate its fine, delicate root system.
  • Watering: Needs consistent, moderate moisture; never allow the root system to completely dry out.
  • Maintenance: Best pruned and repotted immediately after the flowering cycle finishes in late spring to protect next year's bud formation.
