Tokoname-Yaki is one of Japan’s “Six Ancient Kilns,” meaning it is a location of the oldest and most significant pottery traditions in the country. Tokoname pots are known for the durability, light weight, and ability to age well, often developing a unique patina over time.
Bigei (Hirata Atsumi) was a renowned Japanese bonsai potter from the Tokoname region, famous for his handmade, high-quality unglazed shudei (red clay) pots featuring detailed carvings and relief work. He opened his own studio in 1976 after a strict 4-year apprenticeship. His work often showcased burnished finishes.
