The unique set of Tokoname Bonsai Pots were specifically selected by our owner, on his most recent visit to Japan. Tokoname-Yaki is one of Japan’s “Six Ancient Kilns,” meaning it is a location of the oldest and most significant pottery traditions in the country. Tokoname pots are known for the durability, light weight, and ability to age well, often developing a unique patina over time.
Koyo Toen(鴻陽陶園) is a renowned Japanese bonsai pottery kiln based in Tokoname, established in 1970 by Aiba Kouichirou (born 1944). Famous for high-quality glazed bonsai pots—particularly Oribe green, blue, and red—the kiln produces both artistic, one-off pieces and smaller, hand-formed containers under second-generation master Aiba Kuniaki.
History and Evolution
- Founder: Aiba Kouichirou began his career training under his father, who specialized in pottery. In 1970, he built his own kiln, founding Koyo Toen.
- Specialization: Koyo built his reputation on specialized glazing techniques, with his "Oribe" style often compared in quality to esteemed, traditional potters like Heian Tofukuji.
- Techniques: The kiln utilizes a variety of methods, including wheel-thrown, hand-carved, slab, and coil building.
- Second Generation: Today, the kiln is run by Aiba Kuniaki (Aiba's son, born 1973), who works under the name Koyo Juko.
- Family Tradition: Aiba Kouso (Kouichirou's wife) also contributes to the kiln's production, creating smaller containers and Kusamono (accent plant) pots.
Key Characteristics
- Location: Tokoname, Japan (a historic center for Japanese pottery).
- Signature Styles: Renowned for Oribe green, red, and blue glazes, as well as crackle yellow and intricate, carved motifs.
- Range: While famous for glazed pots, the kiln also produces unglazed pots, suiban (shallow containers), and unique, one-off artistic pieces.
