Tokoname-Yaki is one of Japan’s “Six Ancient Kilns,” meaning it is a location of the oldest and most significant pottery traditions in the country. Tokoname pots are known for the durability, light weight, and ability to age well, often developing a unique patina over time.
History and Evolution
- Potter: Gyouzan (Nakano Yukizyou)
- Specialization: Gyouzan is considered perhaps the best living maker of unglazed bonsai pots, he also produces superb glazed pieces.
- Style: Known for impeccable corner and foot work, often utilizing traditional Chinese, Vietnamese, and early Japanese shapes for inspiration.
- Family Collaboration: While Nakano Yukizyou is "Gyouzan," his son-in-law, Nakano Yuuji, also works within the Gyouzan kiln, with his pieces often simply stamped "Yuuji".
